nugget How fast does the string on the dynamite burn? ~ Catherine M.

The "fuse" for dynamite is a string impregnated with black powder. Most fuses burn from 2 to 4 seconds per inch. The miner would cut a 12 inch piece of fuse from a new roll, light it, and time how long it takes burn to figure out exactly how many seconds to the inch.

nugget How did you discover gold? ~ Brody C.

You can find hardrock gold by locating a quartz vein. Break of a piece of quartz and inspect it. Even if you don't see gold, you weigh the quartz and then grind it into a fine powder. Pan the powder and if you find gold, weigh the gold. The difference in weight will tell you how many tons of quartz will yield an ounce of gold.

nugget Why is there gold in astronauts shields? ~ Samantha

Gold is the most reflective and least absorptive material of infrared (or heat) energy. High purity gold reflects up to 99% of infrared rays. This makes gold ideal for heat and radiation reflection, as in life-saving face shields for astronauts and firefighters.

nugget Which is a better conductor of electricity ~ coal or gold? ~ Paul

Coal is primarily used to make electricity. It is burned to boil water, which produces steam. The steam turns giant turbines (like jet engines). The turning of the turbines produces electricity. Around 52% of our nation’s electricity comes from coal. So, coal is used in most of the states at power plants to make electricity.

Gold is among the most electrically conductive of all metals. Since electricity is essentially the flow of charged particles in a current, metals that are conductive allow this current to flow unimpeded. Gold is able to convey even a tiny electrical current in temperatures varying from -55° to +200° centigrade. This makes gold a vital component for electrical connectors in computers and telecommunications equipment.
