Take a Walk Into Gold Rush History!
SATURDAY ONLY! – Sept. 2nd – 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
This is a rare opportunity to explore the seldom seen Priest Mine here at Gold Bug Park. It was hand dug at the peak of California’s Gold Rush and provides a unique and close up experience with history. Its stone walls still show the scars from thousands of pick scrapes. Each mark stands as a lasting testament to the backbreaking work the miners endured in their quest for gold.

Priest Mine tour tickets are $4.00 each and include the use of a hardhat. The first tour will start at 10:00 a.m. Final ticket sales will be at 12:15 p.m. with the last tour starting at 12:40 p.m. sharp. Tickets can be purchased by cash only and only on the day of the tour. There are no age discounts or a requirement to purchase a Gold Bug Mine audio tour.
The park’s free admission provides access to the mining museum, stamp mill presentations, mineral and mining equipment displays and continuous blacksmith demonstrations. There are also miles of dog friendly hiking trails, a gift shop and the Liberty picnic pavilion. Parking is free.
Old West characters will be roaming the park to provide photo opportunities and to share stories about the rough and tumble life in the mining camps. Theses colorful reenactors are from Interactive Entertainment’s Georgetown Divide Regulators. Kathy Drew, the group’s organizer, said the band of lawmen, gunslingers, ladies of the evening and highwaymen will help keep the peace – or perhaps rob an unsuspecting miner. The infamous “Gentleman Bandit” Black Bart will be in the stamp mill telling stories about his daring robberies of Wells Fargo stage coaches throughout the Mother Lode.
The local music group New Sons of the Desert, which will play period music and folk songs in the park’s shady Liberty Picnic Pavilion.
The Gold Bug Mine tour includes a self-guided audio device and the use of a hardhat. Prices for adults are $7.00; Youths 3 to 17 yrs. $4.00; Kids 2 and under are free. Gem panning is $2.00 per hour and includes the use of a gold pan. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Gold Bug Park’s gates are open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. During the Memorial Day weekend the mines, museum, gift shop, stamp mill, panning trough and blacksmith shop are all open from10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The last audio tour of the Gold Bug mine is available starting at 3:30 p.m.
